West Oxfordshire District Council today approved a planning application for a small mosque in Chipping Norton.
The application involved change of use for a vacant retail unit on Hitchmans Mews, off West Street, to provide prayer facilities for the town’s Muslim community.
The council stated that “the mosque will provide a community facility and support the local Muslim population.”
The prayer room will offer accommodation for a few dozen people, with prayer sessions being held for 5 to 10 minutes at a time during the day.
The planning application has prompted some negative reactions in town, as we report on page 6 of our current print edition, and the town council had previously objected to the proposal, on the grounds of ‘loss of retail opportunity’, health and safety, and disturbance to neighbours.
