In the race to grab a bigger share of Chipping Norton’s weekly supermarket shop, it looks like the Midcounties Co-op will get there first.
ALDI has told the News that it hopes to start building its new store on Banbury Road in October this year.
But the expansion work at the Co-op is now well underway. Creation of a new, larger car park and nearly doubling the size of the store was always going to be a challenge, particularly while keeping the store open.
However, chief executive Ben Reid told the News,
“We are on track and expect to launch the new store in the last week in July.”
The changes will also see the Post Office (already run by the Co-op) and possibly both the Co-op pharmacy and travel agent move upstairs into the enlarged new store.
Meanwhile, an ALDI spokesperson told us this week:
“ALDI can confirm it has received planning approval to start work on site. This will begin in October of this year and we plan to open early 2016.
“We look forward to bringing our quality offering with every day low prices to Chipping Norton.”
So although it won’t be open this year, as originally hoped, next year should bring an additional supermarket to Chippy, to add to the larger Co-op, and the existing Sainsbury’s.
