As many of you may already know, Chipping Norton’s Beales shop, along with all the remaining stores, is now definitely closing – after there had been hopes of keeping some of the stores open. In mid-February KPMG, administrators of the stricken company, said they had failed to find a buyer for the shops. Stock liquidation and ‘closing down’ sales started which would take ‘about eight weeks’.
Beales – founded way back in 1881, had taken over what had been the Anglia Co-op store in Chipping Norton several years ago.
Local attention now turns to what can be done with the empty space – which is owned, along with the whole arcade and building, by the Midcounties Co-op, who run the supermarket, pharmacy, travel agent, and funeral directors in town. Midcounties may well want to get the valuable and accessible space occupied, perhaps as more than one shop, as soon as possible – to keep up the use of the units and encourage footfall to their other shops. More news is awaited.
