Chippy man arrested in A40 manslaughter case

A 38-year-old man from Chipping Norton has been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter following an incident in Oxford earlier this month.

At around 11.45pm on Friday 1 May, a 29-year-old woman was hit by a grey Toyota Avensis on the A40 Northern Bypass, whilst crossing the carriageway between the Barton and Cutteslowe roundabouts. She died at the scene.

The driver of the Toyota, a 39-year-old Oxford man, was not injured.

Thames Valley Police believe she had previously got out of a stationary silver Mercedes further along the carriageway, and then walked along the verge. They are appealing for anyone who may have seen the occupants of that car in the area just before the collision.

The Chippy man who was arrested has been bailed until 29 May.

Detective Chief Inspector Simon Steel, from Thames Valley Police’s Major Crime Unit, said:

“We are very keen to hear from anyone who may have seen the occupants of a silver Mercedes in the area just before the collision.

“Anyone with any information about this incident is asked to contact us as a matter of urgency on 101.”

If you do not want to call the 24-hour Thames Valley Police enquiry line on 101, you can contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
